It’s the lull before the storm at Wanaka Wastebusters, as we get ready to deal with nearly double the amount of recycling over Christmas. We’re in good heart despite the worldwide financial crisis affecting the markets for recycled materials like cardboard, aluminum and steel.

Christmas and New Year will only affect Thursday recycling collections – so Luggate, Makarora and Mt Barker’s collections will be moved to Friday 26th December, and Friday 2nd January.

Party hard and remember to recycle afterwards.

Merry Christmas from all the staff at Wanaka Wastebusters

Let Wanaka Wastebusters help you celebrate a Green Christmas this year

Have a Green Christmas

If you want Christmas to have less impact on the environment and your wallet this year – come into the Re-store. Our Christmas gift table has been really popular, with the items changing daily and some great bargains. You can use our recycled wrapping paper, and pick up some free gift tags too. You can also print the gift tags at home – front side and back side.

Love Wanaka - Recycle 50%

Wanaka, Recycle 50%

Wanaka Wastebusters has launched the Recycle 50% campaign. The aim is for Wanaka to compost and recycle 50% of our waste. Council figures show we’re already getting to 43%, which is a great effort. Look for our top tips, free waste check-ups and other initiatives during 2009 to help Wanaka get half-way to Zero Waste.

Dr. Compost Workshops

Learn more about composting

Dr Compost’s workshops have been very popular this year. Here are some tips and photos from his November workshop and some ideas on which type of composting system would suit your household. If you’re having dramas with your compost, Dr Compost can also give one-on-one composting advice by email (drcompost@wanakawastebusters.co.nz) thanks to QLDC’s generosity.

Staff Profiles

Get to know some more of our staff members at Wastebusters. You might see Duncan in the front yard, or out on the bike. Naomi shopped so much at the Re-store that she ended up working there and Angus is a plastic bag-free campaigner from Hong Kong who has been reincarnated as Mr Top-tips on the project team.

Simon’s blog

Si, our education for sustainability facilitator (what a mouthful), continues his great work with kids. Catch up with Makarora school’s visit to Wanaka Wastebusters and the new Hawea school bike park on his blog click here if you’re interested.

Coming up

Watch out for the resumption of Junior Touch on January 12th, sponsored by Wanaka Wastebusters. Bring your 9-14 year old along to the Wanaka rugby grounds to have a great time and get rid of some excess energy. Later in the month, the Stream Day will be a chance for families to enjoy and learn more about Bullock Creek. 28th January, 1.30-3.30pm, at Bullock Creek.
