Sue's report December 2007

This has been a really busy year for us all down at Wastebusters. We really appreciate all the support we have from the community.

We have taken on several new projects and gearing up for these has meant taking on people with new skills and moving to a new level with our planning and communications work. It has been a real stretch for everyone and the risk and effort has been well worthwhile. We now have a really good team of people, all working towards common goal. We are looking forward to all the projects we have mapped out for the New Year.

Recycling is becoming big business around the country and there has been a lot of discussion debate and controversy over which systems and approaches will give the best results. Community sector operations like ours still stack up when you compare the costs and benefits.

The Waste Minimisation Bill has been slowly moving through the House, it has the potential to create a solid framework to move us from a wasteful to a resourceful society if the politicians have the courage to put in place the key provisions required to move us into more sustainable practice. There has been some intense lobbying from all the interest groups and the select committee has the job of pulling the threads together and coming back with a workable bill in March.

Annual plan

A key goal in our Annual Plan is refurbishing and upgrading the infrastructure on site. We have levelled, drained and resurfaced the front yard, hopefully this will give us a dust free summer and an ice free winter.

We have created an office space that seats eight in the old clothes room to make a more comfortable space for the education, communications, project management, planning and everyday admin workers.

The Restore has had a reshuffle and containers now give us dry storage out in the front yard for reusable goods which will help us keep them in better condition until they find a new home.

There are lots of changes still to come in the new year so keep an eye on the progress. We have had a lot of comments on how Wastebusters has changed and grown over the years. Fantastic to think that all our activity is driven by and generated from our own community’s initiative, that’s something we can all be proud of.
