Sue's Report - What’s going on at Wanaka Wastebusters?

Wanaka Wastebusters new ForkliftWanaka Wastebusters is growing steadily, building on our community’s original desire to be able to recycle in our own town. Wanaka Wastebusters was set up by local people in 1999, and we have achieved our original goal of building and running our own recycling centre. In 2005 we competed successfully for council contracts for kerbside recycling and processing in the Wanaka Basin. Basic recycling now pays for itself and we are able to turn our attention to processing more marginal materials, such as plastic 3 to 7 and film.

We are continuing to develop our site and facilities to keep pace with the increase in staff and activity. This year we are working on improving our front yard and drop off area, building an office block and making our reuse shop a more hospitable environment for staff and customers.

Wastebusters goal is to reduce waste in the community, and we have always seen education as the way to do it. So it's great that QLDC have extended our recycling contract to undertake a number of education projects in the community. Our work will help QLDC to achieve some of their waste strategy initiatives.
