![]() Winter 07 NewsletterEducation projects in the communityOur contract with QLDC involves providing zero waste education to help minimise waste in the Wanaka and Wakatipu basins. We’re really excited about this as providing community education has been one of our long term goals. One of our staff members, Simon Williams, has been trained as an Enviroschools Facilitator to offer support to local schools. Enviroschools is a national education for sustainability programme. It gives students the tools to analyse their school environment and see what changes are needed to make their school more sustainable. So far Simon has worked with Hawea Flat, Glenorchy and Arrowtown primary schools, who were all already involved in the programme. “The most exciting thing about working with Enviroschools is feeling the energy it generates,” says Simon. The plan is to take Enviroshools to all schools in the region over the next few years. Simon is also working with schools to provide zero waste education tailored to their own curriculum. He has had a great response to the “Bag the Habit” competition which encouraged Wakatipu students to decorate their own reusable bag. Other subjects covered include Global Warming and Climate change and introducing Zero Waste initiatives into school.
