Dirty mixed up recycling is no fun for anyone and it’s harder to recycle into quality products. That’s why we keep our recycling streams as clean as we can, and we hand-sort everything that comes back to the recycling centre.
Wanaka is a seasonal town, so lots of our businesses are continually training new staff. To make it easy for you, we’ve made this A4 poster about what materials can be recycled. If your staff understand how the recycling system works then it’s easier for everyone and you’ll save money. Print it out and put it up near your recycling station:
There’s nothing we can do with food-contaminated paper or food-contaminated cardboard (including coffee cups), so put them in the rubbish bin.
Waste vegetable oil
Wanaka Wastebusters provides yellow 20 litre containers for waste vegetable (fryer) oil storage. We pick up the oil regularly or on demand for no charge. Most take-aways in Wanaka take advantage of this free service. The waste veggie oil is sent to Biodiesel New Zealand to be made into biodisesel. All our business trucks run on biodiesel – 100% in the summer and a mixed blend in the winter so that it doesn’t solidify in the cold.
