Wanaka Wastebusters is open 9am – 5pm, seven days a week. The only days we close are Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter Friday and Anzac morning.
Wanaka Wastebusters was set up by our community in 2000 to start recycling and reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill. We are a community owned enterprise, which provides innovative resource recovery and education for sustainability solutions for our community and across New Zealand.
Households and businesses can drop off their recycling to us for a minimal charge of $1 per 100 litres (a large crate). We take all the standard recycling (paper, cardboard, glass, plastics 1-7, aluminium and steel). We also take as many other items for recycling as we can, many of which would be hazardous in the landfill. Things you can recycle with us include TVs, computers, used engine oil, batteries, polystyrene and eco-bulbs. Click here to see the full list of things you can recycle with us.
We are passionate about helping people reduce their waste and find ways to reuse, compost and recycle. Our work locally includes education for sustainability in Lakes District schools and preschools, and Dr Compost’s advice and workshops (both supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council funding).
Since 2010 we have run the nationwide Unpackit Awards to help people and businesses make smart packaging choices, with funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund. We also started On the Road Recycling in the South Island to help tourists and travellers recycle, and have been involved in the Campaign for Real Recycling.
