On The Road Recycling

You can still recycle while you are on holiday!

The aim of On The Road Recycling is to encourage visitors and NZ holidaymakers to make use of recycling services as they travel.  This backs up the ‘100% pure’ promise that NZ makes to its visitors.

How it works

Free recycling bags can be picked up at participating i-SITE’s and DOC visitor centres across the South Island. Bags are filled with recycling and then can be dropped off at any recycling centres in the South Island. Check the On the Road Recycling website to find the closest recycling centre to your location.

On The Road Recycling has three main strategies:

1: Branding: Providing a consistent easily recognisable brand and key messages about recycling services across New Zealand.

2: Information: Providing information about recycling services (maps, addresses, what can be recycled) in tourism publications, centres and online.

3: Practical Solution: A specific bag and designated drop off points to make it easy for visitors to separate and drop off their recycling.

The scheme was initially developed in Northland and has now been implemented across the South Island.  In South Island the scheme is supported by recycling centres and i-SITE visitor centres with financial support from Wanaka Wastebusters, Otago Regional Council, Remarkable Recyclers and Queenstown Lakes District Council.
