Does excessive packaging drive you bananas? Do you feel duped by the wording on packaging? Do you feel unsure about whether or not you are making the best choices when you go shopping? Well, we are here to help!
We have recently received funding from The Ministry for the Environment Waste Minimisation Fund for a project to ‘Demystify Packaging choices’.
We aim to show that by working together we can make a difference. We want to dispel any rumours and myths surrounding packaging, give people the knowledge they need make the right choices, and help them develop an understanding of how to become the solution rather than unwittingly contribute to the problem.
So come on, Jump on board our demystifying train, no tickets needed…… Help us find out what’s hot and what’s not in the crazy world of packaging.
The project will run until June 2011
We have chosen 5 key locations across New Zealand with varied demographics where we can get a range of different opinions, attitudes, thoughts and ideas from people all across the board:
- Wanaka
- Gore – Pakeke Lion Club
- Nelson – Nelson Environment Centre
- Grey Lynn-Auckland – Grey Lynn 2030 transition town,
- Dunedin – Otago farmers market
The project has been split into 5 sections:
- October/Nov 2010 - Conduct 1000 surveys throughout the 5 partner towns to find out what exactly people know or believe about their packaging choices. Hold a press conference to report on the survey results.
- Dec 2010’ – Jan 2011’ - Set up a website and send out factsheets to all towns involved and further afield to get the whole of NZ buzzing about our project.
By the end of Jan the website will be open for all to check it out. We will be putting regular blogs, pics, stories and much more…..We want to get as much info out there to start people feeling more confident in making their daily shopping choices. - Feb – March - COMPETITION: we will be asking the good people all over New Zealand to send examples of their best and worst packaging examples.
- April 2011 – The Wanaka Wastebusters Roadshow will hit the streets of New Zealand razzing up people and getting the word out about this awesome project. During this time we will be getting as many people as possible to vote online for their best and worst packaging examples. This will be a circus mash up of music, information, performance and maybe some surprises……
- June – We will re-do the original survey in the 5 partner towns to see if we have managed to make a difference in helping people feel more confident in their choices regarding packaging over the last 9 months.
