Getting Started
First thing to do is to get hold of a black recycling crate. If your house doesn’t have one, give Queenstown Lakes District Council a call on 443-0024 and they can sort you out.
Kerbside recycling in Wanaka, Albert Town, Hawea, Luggate and Cardrona is collected by Wanaka Wastebusters, under contract to Queenstown Lakes District Council. We prefer a black crate to a wheelie bin because it keeps the recycling stream clean and uncontaminated.
Our aim is to produce clean, uncontaminated recycling which is worthy of the name. We can only do that with your help, and we are always impressed at the care Wanaka people take with their recycling.
Materials
Glass, plastics 1-7, cans, cardboard and paper are all collected for recycling. Give the glass, plastic and cans a wash, and put them in your black crate. Plastic containers and cans should be squashed before putting them in your black crate. No lids please – bottles with lids on don’t compact properly.
All plastics should have a number between one and seven in a triangle on the bottom of the container. No number = no recycling - because it’s an unidentified mix of plastics. We encourage you to choose plastic containers that can be recycled, and to write to the manufacturer if a product you buy regularly comes in a plastic container without a recycling triangle.
Our truck has separate compartments for paper and cardboard, so we ask you to bundle these separately and tie them securely. Put the bundles on top of, or next to your black crate.
Your crate goes out one metre from the kerb by 8am on the morning of your collection day. You can print a reminder of what goes in your crate and pop it up on your fridge.
One tip to make it easier for our runners is that you don’t have to wait for your crate to fill up before putting it out. The runners have to empty the crates overhead into the truck, so they actually like half-full crates!
Too much recycling?
Is there such as thing as too much recycling? We think not. But households who like to party, or who eat a lot of canned food, may find their crate is overflowing every week. No worries – for only $15 you can get an extra black crate by calling Queenstown Lakes District Council on 443-0024. There’s no extra charge for putting two crates out on recycling day.
Holidays 2010
Because Christmas day and New Year’s day fall on a Saturday this year, there will be no disruption to kerbside collections over the festive season. Please put your recycling out by 8am on your normal recycling day.
Kerbside collections run as normal during every other public holiday. The recycling centre in Ballantyne Rd is open 9am-4pm seven days a week, except Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac morning.
Recycling Drop-offs
You are always welcome to come down to our recycling centre, corner of Ballantyne and Riverbank Rd and drop off your recycling in the yard. There is a charge for business recycling, please stop at the shop when you arrive. The recycling centre is open 9am-4pm seven days a week, except Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac morning.
There is also an after-hours drop-off at the front gate. Rural recycling drop-offs are located at Dublin Bay, Maungawera Valley and Domain Rd, Lake Hawea. Rural drop-offs can be used at any time, and are cleared once a week.
